The House Republicans are not messing around when it comes to Attorney General Merrick Garland and his refusal to hand over audio recordings of an interview between former special counsel Robert Hur and President Joe Biden from last year. Representatives James Comer (R-KY) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) addressed a stern warning to Garland, letting him know that if he doesn’t cough up the goods, they’ll slap him with a big ol’ contempt of Congress charge. The Republicans are not messing around and are giving Garland until April 8 to hand over those recordings. Tick tock, Mr. Garland.

Comer and Jordan are not happy campers, expressing their discontent with the “insufficient” and “inadequate” material that the Department of Justice has provided so far in response to their subpoena. It’s like when you order fries and only get a couple of sad, cold ones at the bottom of the bag, instead of a nice, hot, crispy bunch of ’em. Not cool, DOJ, not cool.
The two Republican ringleaders had initially asked for a bunch of stuff related to Hur’s investigation of Biden, including a transcript of the interview between Hur and Biden, as well as audio recordings of the interview and chats between Biden and his ghostwriter. Like kids in a candy store, Comer and Jordan want it all, not just the redacted version of the transcript that they received. No redactions here, thank you very much. They want the juicy, unredacted version and the audio recordings to boot.
Hur’s report, published last month, found that Biden had fumbled with classified documents and blurted out classified info to his ghostwriter. But hey, based on the interview and chats, Hur thought that Biden might have a decent alibi going because he came across as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Aww, poor ol’ Joe.
The redacted transcript confirmed that Biden had his memory slips here and there, along with moments of sharpness. But the audio recordings could be the key to unlocking the mystery of Biden’s mental acuity, like a detective solving a case. We might hear the speed of his speech, filler words, and who knows what else? It’s like trying to figure out what’s in a wrapped present without tearing the paper. The Republicans want to unwrap that present, Mr. Garland.
The Department of Justice isn’t saying much in response to Comer and Jordan’s threats, but you can bet they’re feeling the heat. The battle rages on, and it’s a showdown between the Republicans and the DOJ. Let’s see who comes out on top!
