House Democrats Urge Biden to Halt Military Aid to Israel Amid Gaza Concerns

A group of more than 50 House Democrats are urging President Joe Biden to stop sending military aid and weapons to Israel in order to prevent potential harm to residents in Gaza if Israel were to launch a ground invasion in Rafah as part of its conflict with Hamas. This call to action has stirred divisions within the Democratic party over how much support should be provided to Israel and how to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The letter, led by Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Madeleine Dean, strongly criticizes the possibility of Israel’s full-scale offensive on Rafah, labeling it as “wholly unacceptable.” They emphasize the urgency of Hamas and Israel reaching a ceasefire agreement to secure the safe return of hostages, resume humanitarian aid, and create the conditions for a long-term peace in the region.

This coalition of House Democrats, which includes members of the “Squad” such as Representatives Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, believes that an offensive in Rafah could lead to an escalation that the United States cannot afford. They express concerns about the need for humanitarian aid in Gaza and stress the importance of holding both the safety and security of Israel and the situation in Gaza.

Recently, the House voted on a bill requiring the Education Department to incorporate the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism into the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Seventy Democrats voted against this bill, raising worries about free speech and the exclusion of other antisemitism definitions.

Representative Becca Balint, who was among the 70 “no” votes, stated that the letter serves as an outlet for members to voice their concerns about humanitarian aid in Gaza, despite their support for Israel. She acknowledged the difficulty of balancing these beliefs in politics and expressed hope for a receptive response from the Biden administration.

In conclusion, this coalition of House Democrats is pushing for a change in the approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid in Gaza while maintaining support for Israel’s safety and security. Their efforts reflect the complexity of navigating foreign policy and addressing humanitarian crises in the region.
