House Sends Mayorkas Impeachment Articles, Dems Aim for Quick Acquittal

The House sent the articles impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate. The Democrats plan for a swift acquittal for Mr. Mayorkas. Representative Mark Green and 10 other Republicans took the articles to the Senate and read the 19-page indictment into the record. The Senators will be sworn in as jurors on Wednesday. The Democrats hope to quickly stop the proceedings and block a full trial.

Mr. Green accused Mr. Mayorkas of not following the laws and breaking the public’s trust. He portrayed Mr. Mayorkas’ immigration policies as disastrous. Meanwhile, Mr. Mayorkas said he has done his best with the resources he has been given. The Democrats assured Mr. Mayorkas that the Senate would clear him of the charges.

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer plans to make a motion to dismiss the articles, which would halt the trial. If the motion passes, it would set a new precedent as every previous impeachment has led to a trial. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell cautioned against prematurely derailing the articles.

Mr. Mayorkas was impeached in February on a 214-213 vote, with no Democratic support. House leaders delayed sending the articles to the Senate in their efforts to pressure the chamber into holding a full trial. Mr. Mayorkas has refused to answer questions about a potential terror attack and other security concerns.
