Kamala Harris Plays Safe Politics With Mail-In Voting Silence on Prop 36

The political theater surrounding Vice President Kamala Harris just got a new act, and it’s one that would make even the most seasoned soap opera writer raise an eyebrow. Under the bright lights of Election Day, Harris—who has somehow been both a Vice President and a former attorney general—chose to send her ballot through the USPS, that beloved institution known for its impeccable reliability and lightning-fast service. Fortunately for her, it appears she has faith in the postal system, despite the skepticism that often surrounds mail-in ballots these days.

Harris decided to keep her voting choices about California’s Proposition 36 under wraps, which proposes harsher penalties for certain crimes, including theft and drug offenses. Perhaps she doesn’t want to upset the liberal base in her home state that often leans towards leniency in crime legislation. Her avoidance of sharing her position on an initiative that directly relates to crime and public safety is nothing short of baffling—one would think that a former district attorney would have a strong opinion on the matter. However, it seems that even in the thick of potential crime-fighting progress, political expediency takes the front seat.

While addressing reporters, she stated that she had mailed her ballot and was trusting the system to do its job—a nice thought, but one that has many questioning whether that faith is justified. After all, it’s not like the postal service has had its share of hiccups in recent years. Participating in an election with such carefree abandon might suggest that Harris is either overly optimistic or simply detached from the concerns of the average voter who has experienced delivery delays and ballot mishaps firsthand.

Harris claimed she wouldn’t weigh in on her vote since she was trying to avoid any endorsements before Election Day. This seems more like a calculated risk than a principled stance. In a time when crime rates are a hot topic and voters are looking for clear leadership, dodging a clear stance on crime measures does more to confuse than to clarify. The Democrats have often been criticized for their soft approach to crime, and Harris’ silence speaks volumes as it reflects a common fear among politicians: saying the wrong thing might just cost them votes.

In a world where the American public desires transparency and decisiveness, Harris’ vague declarations involving her ballot choices do little to inspire confidence. Voters want leaders who will stand firm on their principles, especially on critical issues like crime. But when it comes to appeasing both wings of her party, Kamala Harris appears to be stuck in a political limbo, serving up a heaping dose of “wait and see” instead of bending the arc of justice toward clarity. For now, voters can only wonder which way the Vice President’s beliefs will sway once the ballots are tallied.
