Republican Representative Russell Fry of South Carolina has proposed a new and sensible legislation that would allow federal agents to purchase their service weapons after they retire from official use. This Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act aims to prevent the waste of taxpayers’ money by allowing these officers to buy their firearms at a market rate instead of having them destroyed. This act would give active federal law enforcement officers the opportunity to purchase their service weapons once they retire from the agency and save millions of dollars in waste.

The Democrats have long argued that they care about police and mental health services, but reality tells a different story. In the recent midterms, the 117th Congress passed a slate of bills that increased funding for police and mental health services on a bipartisan basis. Some of the bills that were passed, such as the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, the Invest to Protect Act, the Victim Act, and the Mental Health Justice Act, combined to allocate $2.75 billion to states and locales. However, even though they were supported by frontline Democrats, some far-left members like the Squad opposed them.
Moreover, Congress has recently reversed a law passed by the D.C. City Council that would have cut funding for the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and lowered penalties for crimes such as carjacking. With 203 people dead from homicide in the nation’s capital in 2022, according to MPD data, free steering wheel locks are now being distributed to Kia and Hyundai owners to prevent carjackings.
Rep. Fry’s proposed legislation would be immensely helpful in promoting responsible firearm usage and saving taxpayers’ money. It would also benefit these brave law enforcement officials who have served their country, and who deserve the right to purchase their own service weapons at market price. This much-needed legislation is a welcome initiate for those who believe in freedom, personal responsibility, and the Second Amendment.
