Republicans Behaving Strangely: A Closer Look at What’s Happening Now

Republicans should be capitalizing on their opportunities in 2024. President Joe Biden’s approval rating is in the dumps, inflation is still a problem, and the American public isn’t feeling confident about the direction of the country. Crime is rampant in many cities, and there are still pressing issues like the fentanyl crisis and the mental health crisis. It seems like the perfect time for Republicans to make their case to the American people.

But, of course, leave it to the Republicans to find a way to screw things up. Right now, they’re stuck arguing over social studies standards in Florida. Yes, you read that correctly. While the country is facing serious challenges, the Republicans are busy bickering over one line about slavery in a set of standards. It’s like watching a group of children fight over who gets the last cookie.

Here’s a simple solution: stop arguing and move on. Governor Ron DeSantis should simply point out that the standards were written by academic professionals, not his office, and refer all questions to the committee that wrote them. Senator Tim Scott should acknowledge that the wording could have been better, but emphasize that his focus is on the country and that education decisions should be left to local and state officials. It’s not rocket science, folks.

Instead, we have candidates who should be gaining momentum getting caught up in unnecessary drama. The frontrunner, DeSantis, is facing legal troubles while the other candidates are nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, the media is obsessed with asking questions about Trump, the 2020 election, and social justice. The candidates have a choice to redirect the conversation to the important talking points, but they’re choosing not to. It’s a missed opportunity.

In the grand scheme of things, this little tiff in the Republican primary won’t matter. What will matter is that, during this time, the candidates were not addressing the real concerns of the American people. It’s a distraction from the issues that actually matter. Republicans need to do better and focus on the Great American Comeback, not petty arguments.
