The Senate lawmakers are gearing up for a vote on the hefty $886 billion annual defense bill, otherwise known as the National Defense Authorization Act. This bad boy is expected to pass with support from both sides of the aisle before it heads to the House for another round of voting. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, a big-time Democrat from New York, has been waving his hands in the air, saying that getting this bill passed is a top priority for the Senate before they all pack up for the holiday break.
Chuckie-boy has been feeling quite chatty about this whole situation, trumpeting that this defense bill has been a real crowd-pleaser in Congress for over 60 years. He’s all fired up, saying, “We must pass the annual National Defense Authorization Bill… This will be our focus on the floor this week.” You go, Chuck!
One of the perks in this defense bill is a juicy 5.2% pay raise for the military folks starting in January. Guess what? This is the biggest pay bump for our troops in over 20 years! The Defense Department is hoping that by waving some more cash in front of the troops, they’ll get more people signing up. Apparently, they’ve been having a hard time finding new recruits. The Army aimed for 55,000 recruits but ended up with 10,000 fewer. Come on, folks, sign up! Uncle Sam needs you!
Mr. Schumer also warned everyone that in these uncertain times for global security, passing this defense bill is more crucial than ever. Hang on to your hats, everyone!
But hold on a sec! Mr. Schumer’s adversary, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, has got some fellow GOP pals whispering in his ear, and they’re not too keen on some parts of this bill. Missouri Senator Josh Hawley is putting his foot down, vowing to oppose the whole shebang and slow down the process. Why? Because the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act got the boot from the bill! This act compensates Americans who got sick from the country’s atomic program, like uranium mine workers and those living near nuclear tests. Mr. Hawley isn’t pulling any punches. He’s calling this move a “grave injustice” and accusing the bill of giving a big ol’ middle finger to the American people in favor of lining the pockets of the suits and corporate bigwigs.
But the cheerleaders for this NDAA are saying, “Hold on there, grumpy pants! This bill is crucial to take on China’s growing military muscle.” They’re getting excited about the trilateral U.S., U.K., and Australian nuclear submarine agreement, known as AUKUS. Mr. Schumer is giving himself a pat on the back, saying, “We got it done, folks! AUKUS is a major big deal in our arsenal against the Chinese government. A *major* accomplishment.”
So there you have it, folks! Buckle up, because it’s about to go down in the Senate! This defense bill is causing quite the ruckus, and everyone’s got something to say about it. Stay tuned for the latest drama!
