Hot off the press: The Supreme Court refuses to step in on a racially charged affirmative action case at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia.
This high school, known for its academic excellence, faced a lawsuit from a group of parents after it altered its admissions process to increase Black and Hispanic student enrollment post the George Floyd tragedy in 2020. The shift bumped Asian applicants down the ladder.
In a 7-2 ruling, the top court shut down the parents’ plea, with Justice Alito and Thomas standing on the opposing side. Their dissents were scathing to say the least, pointing out the dubious nature of affirmative action practices at this school.
This outcome is a win for those championing affirmative action, turning a blind eye to the discriminatory measures being put in place under the guise of equality. The Fourth Circuit Appeals Court’s decision, labeling the policy shift as race-neutral, is like putting lipstick on a pig – it doesn’t change the fact that discrimination is still occurring.
The school’s abandonment of standardized testing in favor of flimsy criteria like language proficiency or attending a certain type of school smacks of playing favorites and lowering standards to fit a certain agenda. This isn’t about meritocracy; it’s about engineering a student body based on skin color rather than qualifications.
Justice Alito’s words ring true – if the courts continue to allow this kind of backdoor discrimination, what’s to stop other schools from following suit? We can’t let the virus of biased admissions infect our educational institutions unchecked.
The Coalition for TJ, fighting for fairness, is right to challenge these manipulative practices that disproportionately disadvantage Asian students. Let’s hope the higher courts come to their senses and put an end to this reprehensible discrimination by proxy.
