Swalwell’s Career in Freefall: Multiple Women Accuse Him of Assault

The past week has ripped the mask off yet another Democratic favorite, as multiple women have stepped forward with harrowing allegations that Rep. Eric Swalwell crossed every line between inappropriate behavior and alleged criminal violence. The San Francisco Chronicle and national outlets have reported that at least four women described sexual misconduct, with one former staffer saying she was assaulted when she was too intoxicated to consent.

On April 14, a fifth woman, identified as Lonna Drewes, held a news briefing saying she believes her drink was drugged and that she was subsequently raped and choked unconscious during an encounter in 2018 — accusations that, if true, are beyond the pale and demand a full accounting. Her account was covered by local and national reporters who also noted she has gone public with sworn statements and photographs tying her to social events with Swalwell.

Swalwell’s political career imploded almost immediately; he suspended his California gubernatorial bid and announced plans to resign from Congress amid a wave of condemnation and a mass withdrawal of endorsements from Democratic backers. What was once a viable run for higher office evaporated in days as the party distanced itself from a once-celebrated figure.

Federal and local authorities have moved quickly to open investigations — the Manhattan district attorney’s office is probing at least one of the allegations and the House Ethics Committee has launched its own inquiry into whether Swalwell violated the rules of his office. This is not merely political theater; it is a legal and ethical matter that requires evidence, witnesses, and accountability.

Conservatives should not gloat at another Democrat’s disgrace, but neither should we pretend the left’s moralizing has been sincere. For years, Swalwell posed as a crusader against corruption and foreign influence; now those same elites who cheered him on must explain how they ignored warning signs and protected a rising star until the allegations became too public to conceal. The American people deserve consistency — and the party of accountability must practice what it preaches.

There must be a sober commitment to due process: let prosecutors do their jobs and let the evidence speak. At the same time, the women who have come forward deserve to be heard without being shouted down by partisan hacks or dismissed as political operatives. True conservatism stands for the rule of law and for supporting victims who seek justice, not for playing partisan games.

If the allegations are proven, the consequences should be swift and severe — criminal charges where merited, permanent exile from public office, and a reckoning within a political culture that enabled this behavior. If they are not, then Mr. Swalwell should be cleared and his life restored; but that restoration must follow a transparent legal process, not a whisper campaign or backroom deal. The fight for decency in public life demands nothing less.
