World Reacts as Trump Begins Second Term as US President

The global stage lit up with reactions as Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025, marking the beginning of a much-anticipated second term. The world leaders’ responses were a kaleidoscope of relief, excitement, and perhaps a tinge of apprehension, reminiscent of America’s own fluctuating sentiments. As Trump took the reins once again, authoritarian figures around the world suddenly seemed more eager than ever to engage diplomatically—or politely cower in fear.

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, extended her congratulations on behalf of her government, signaling a new era of diplomacy between the two neighbors. This was no accidental gesture. In response, Trump wasted no time to reestablish preeminence at the southern border, reinstating policies such as the remains-in-Mexico program. It’s safe to assume President Sheinbaum’s cheerful tone masked a certain anxiety as she realized the days of cavalier border policies were about to be firmly closed like an overstuffed suitcase.

Meanwhile, Canada appeared to be in an affectionate tizzy, possibly due to Trump’s recent talk about incorporating the Great White North into the American fold as its 51st state. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suddenly found a newfound enthusiasm to collaborate—one might have guessed the 25% tariffs Trump slapped on Canadian imports had something to do with the change of heart. When the U.S. works smarter rather than harder in trade negotiations, winning becomes a more familiar theme.

Turning to the Middle East, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was all smiles upon Trump’s reelection. Known for the strong bond between the U.S. and Israel during Trump’s first term, Netanyahu’s elation hinted at an upcoming partnership that promised even larger achievements. With backing from Trump, Israel boldly anticipated more victories in crucial diplomatic maneuvers, including the ongoing struggle for peace and safety against Iran’s threats. The U.S.-Israel friendship, historically robust, seemed headed for even greater heights courtesy of Trump’s strategic influence.

As the festivities wound down, far away in Russia, Vladimir Putin congratulated Trump with a tone markedly different from his previous cold shoulder. The shift to a friendlier demeanor indicated that the Kremlin might be adjusting its global playbook following Trump’s ascendance. The Russian leader expressed hope for dialogue regarding thorny issues like Ukraine, although one couldn’t help but be aware that there is often a catch when Putin speaks. His remarks concerning long-term peace seemed almost too generous, leading many to wonder how long it would take for those plans to unravel.

In the midst of all this, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy wasted no time in lauding Trump’s “peace through strength” mantra. While politicians worldwide profess their serene intentions, conservative Americans likely remembered past pleasantries from Zelenskyy often circling around, well, requests for more military aid. Though Trump has signaled a desire to wrap up endless warfare in regions like Ukraine, whether that ambition holds firm in practice remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, in the far east at a lesser volume, Chinese President Xi Jinping wasn’t seen celebrating Trump’s inauguration—likely calculating his next chess move. While Han Zheng attended the ceremony, a hint of anxiety wafted through Beijing, especially after Trump made a bold declaration about regaining control of the Panama Canal. A new game of geopolitical poker was about to unfold, with Xi undoubtedly keeping a watchful eye on the new old player in Washington.

Overall, the stage is set for a new political landscape, one that appears poised for strength and pragmatism. As Trump officially returns, the question on everyone’s lips remains: will he deliver on his hard-hitting promises, or will he face the all-too-common challenges that come with the political territory? Buckle up, because the ride promises to be anything but dull.
