Everybody says they’ve “evolved” after getting caught on tape. But when CNN KFile drags up a 2020 clip where Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El‑Sayed admits, “We do need to defund the police,” you can’t just shrug and call it old news. This is the latest example of a left‑wing candidate trying to rewrite history while running for a swing seat. Voters should be allowed to judge whether that evolution is real or just convenient PR.
What CNN KFile Found
CNN KFile reviewed archived interviews and deleted social posts and unearthed multiple instances where Abdul El‑Sayed used “defund the police” language. The most damning is that 2020 audio where he plainly said, “We do need to defund the police.” Reporters also noted deleted tweets and older clips where similar rhetoric appears. That’s not a rumor. It’s an audio clip and a paper trail. The candidate’s camp says these items are old and taken out of context. But deleted posts are deleted for a reason — they look bad now.
Campaign Pushback: “Cherry‑Picked” and “Old”
El‑Sayed’s campaign insists the clips are cherry‑picked and don’t reflect his current views. He’s been telling interviewers that headlines are clickbait and that he respects the Second Amendment while supporting common‑sense gun safety. Fine — people do change. But the campaign deleted tweets and old audio don’t erase what he said in public. “Evolved” is a useful word when it helps win votes. It’s less useful when there are receipts.
Why This Matters in the Michigan Senate Race
This is more than a gotcha. Michigan is a swing state, and the Senate primary will decide whether Democrats nominate a candidate who energizes the base or hands swing voters an easy attack line. El‑Sayed has big progressive endorsements and national attention. That matters — but so does electability. Opponents and conservative outlets will run the audio and the deleted tweet narrative nonstop in a general election. Voters in the middle care less about internal party purity tests and more about safety and common sense. When a candidate’s past statements undercut that message, the whole party pays the price.
Don’t Expect “I’ve Evolved” to Save Them
We’ve seen this movie before. Candidates cry “I’ve evolved” and hope the scandal fades. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it blows up into a campaign‑ending problem. The El‑Sayed tape won’t magically disappear because his team says the clips are dated. If Democrats want to persuade swing voters, they should pick candidates who don’t need to explain away a public record that screams “radical” to the average person. Until then, conservatives should keep the receipts handy and remind voters what “evolved” really meant in the clips that were recorded — not the ones the campaign wishes it could edit out.
