When Pastor Lorenzo Sewell stood before the Dearborn City Council and declared, “America, we have lost this city” and accused officials of operating “under Sharia law,” he lit a fuse that many Americans have been quietly feeling for years. His words were raw and unapologetic, and they reflected a larger frustration among patriots who see local leaders failing to put the Constitution first.
The confrontation unfolded amid a charged atmosphere: conservative activist Jake Lang’s so-called “Christian Crusader March” drew protesters and counterprotesters, forcing the council to move the meeting and prompting a heavy police presence. Dearborn police later reported dozens of arrests as tensions boiled over, showing the serious public-order consequences when civic leaders lose control of a situation.
Sewell and others pointed to an August confrontation during Dearborn’s Arbaeen March as the kind of incident that stokes the suspicion of unequal treatment, arguing that law enforcement and officials have not been even-handed in protecting all citizens. Those are not comfortable accusations for any city to face, and they demand answers rather than moralizing from the political class.
Conservatives should be clear-eyed: questioning public policies and local decisions that appear to favor one group’s practices over the constitutional rights of others is not bigotry — it is citizenship. Sewell exercised the fundamental American right to speak out when he believes his community and faith are being sidelined, and the proper response from elected officials is to address the claims with facts and fair enforcement, not to dismiss or demonize the questioners.
Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and other city leaders have urged unity and reassured residents they belong, a worthy goal, but words alone won’t restore confidence if residents perceive inconsistent policing or partisan decision-making. Dearborn’s leadership must demonstrate, through transparent action and accountability, that every resident’s rights are protected under American law, without exceptions or special treatment.
Patriotic Americans should demand that law enforcement do its job even-handedly and that city councils enforce the law fairly — protecting peaceful worship while punishing violent provocation, no matter who is involved. This episode in Dearborn is a warning sign: when local officials appear to hedge or hesitate, they hand the narrative to agitators and deepen divisions that politicians should be bridging.
If conservatives care about preserving our Constitution and the rule of law, we must hold the line now — not with harassment or hatred, but with relentless insistence on equal protection, clear law-and-order, and leaders who put America first. The fight over Dearborn’s city council chamber is larger than one speech or one protest; it’s about whether elected officials will defend the timeless principle that all Americans answer to one law, the Constitution, and nothing less.
