In a hilariously ironic turn of events, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the self-proclaimed champion of student loan forgiveness, has been revealed to owe up to $50,000 in student loans herself. Yes, you read that correctly. The socialist darling of the left, who has been busy demanding the cancellation of thousands of dollars in student debt for others, seems to have forgotten to take care of her own financial obligations.
According to a financial disclosure reviewed by the Washington Examiner, Ocasio-Cortez’s student loan debt was between $15,000 and $50,000 as of 2022. This comes as no surprise, as her previous financial disclosure in 2021 also showed her holding up to $50,000 in liability. It seems that while she has been busy virtue signaling and playing the hero for struggling college graduates, she has neglected to address her own debts.
It’s truly remarkable that someone who has been so vocal about the need for student loan forgiveness has allowed herself to accumulate tens of thousands of dollars in debt. But hey, why take personal responsibility when you can just demand that taxpayers foot the bill? It’s the progressive way, after all.
What’s even more amusing is that Ocasio-Cortez has been celebrating President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, which promises to forgive up to $20,000 for borrowers who make under $125,000 a year. While she may be thrilled about this “first step,” she’s still advocating for even more forgiveness for those who have accumulated even higher amounts of debt. It’s as if she believes that the rules of personal responsibility don’t apply to her or her fellow progressives.
But Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the only member of the “Squad” who seems to have a problem managing her own finances. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, another advocate for student loan forgiveness, owes more than $100,000 to the Department of Education for her law degree. Talk about hypocrisy! These so-called champions of the people are all too happy to demand forgiveness for others while conveniently neglecting their own debts.
It’s clear that Ocasio-Cortez and her squad are more interested in political grandstanding than in being responsible stewards of their own finances. Their calls for student loan forgiveness ring hollow when they themselves have failed to take care of their own obligations. It’s time for them to practice what they preach and start paying off their own debts instead of expecting the rest of us to foot the bill.
