Ben Shapiro’s recent push to secure a presidential pardon for Derek Chauvin has lit a firestorm inside and outside conservative circles, and he deserves credit for forcing a necessary debate about law, media and due process. On March 4, 2025, Shapiro published an open letter and launched a public petition at PardonDerek.com arguing the Chauvin prosecution was corrupted by media spectacle, and he followed that with a short series making the case for re-examining the facts.
The campaign was straightforward: a letter, a petition and a demand that the executive act where the judges and juries allegedly failed, and it quickly drew tens of thousands of signatures as well as national attention. The Daily Wire ran the material and promoted a five-part series called “The Case for Derek Chauvin,” making the argument that questions remain and that conservatism should defend procedural fairness for everyone, even unpopular defendants.
Let’s be clear about the law so nobody gets gaslit: a presidential pardon can address federal offenses but cannot erase a separate state conviction that carries a long prison term, which is the real reason critics said the effort was more symbolic than practical. Conservatives who care about precision should acknowledge that nuance — calling for a pardon does not magically unclog every judicial consequence, but it does place a spotlight on federal overreach and prosecutorial zeal.
Of course the left and their online echo chambers predictably screamed, and opportunists like Mark Dice rushed to label the effort a “scam” or merely an email-collection scheme — a typical attempt to delegitimize any conservative who dares challenge the prevailing narrative. Those attacks miss the point and reveal a desperate reflex: weaponize every technicality and shout “phony” instead of answering the substantive questions Shapiro raised about evidence, media-driven narratives, and equal treatment under the law.
Conservatives ought to rally behind the principle, not the headlines. Whether you agree with Ben Shapiro’s conclusion or not, he reopened an argument about fairness and the politicization of justice that the right has been too timid to make; that boldness should be rewarded, not punished, by our side. The left’s reflex to cancel and smear only proves why principled conservatives must keep fighting to restore respect for law and individual rights.
It’s time for hardworking Americans to stop feuding over personalities and refocus on the real fight: holding a biased media and politicized justice system to account. Ben Shapiro stirred controversy because he refused to let a convenient story go unchallenged, and that stubbornness — standing up for process and truth even when it’s unpopular — is exactly the kind of conservative courage this country needs.
