Vice President Kamala Harris may have already washed up in the 2024 presidential race, but a former aide thinks there’s still a last-ditch plan that could catapult her into the Oval Office. This master scheme, which sounds more like a Hollywood script than a political strategy, involves none other than the current resident of that esteemed house, President Joe Biden.
Jamal Simmons, who previously served as Harris’s communications director, recently appeared on CNN’s State of the Union, where he pitched an idea that can only be described as a fever dream for the left. According to Simmons, Biden should step aside and allow Harris to take the reins so he can end his presidency with a dramatic flourish. In his view, this would also spare Harris the embarrassment of presiding over her own defeat from the January 6 transition. Because truly, what is a little betrayal between friends in the name of political ambition?

Simmons was positively beaming in his vision for this political handoff. He claims that Biden’s resignation would not only fulfill the last promise of “being a transitional figure” but also dominate the headlines. The notion that drama and “transparency” in the Democratic Party could somehow invigorate the electorate may have the faint whiff of desperation. The plan seems less about the people’s will and more about rescuing a party stuck in a sinking ship, with Harris as its last lifeboat.
A CNN host even stepped in to comment that Simmons’ theory had moved from being an internet meme to actually being discussed on a Sunday morning show. In other words, the left possibly reached peak absurdity right before breakfast. While the idea of older liberal Supreme Court justices jumping ship for fresh-faced replacements may have flitted through the air, Simmons quickly dismissed that line of thought to focus on his bid for a Harris presidency. It appears that even in leftist circles, the talk of a Biden-Harris connection might be the only thing more toxic than their approval ratings.
If one dared to follow Simmons’ logic down the rabbit hole, one could only marvel at the level of denial regarding their chances of winning in 2024. Having Biden hand over the presidency in a plot twist worthy of daytime soap operas seems like reaching for the stars while tethered to a sinking anchor. Perhaps, if Biden is even conscious enough in thirty days to consider such theatrics, he should remember a pivotal truth: If Harris couldn’t even secure her own future as a candidate, there’s little chance she can do so as president. This plan reeks more of desperation than a strategic maneuver by a party in disarray. It may just remind voters why they wanted change in the first place.
