President Biden’s loose tongue has once again caught Beijing’s attention after he spoke about Xi Jinping at a fundraising event in California on Tuesday. China’s foreign ministry described Biden’s comments as “extremely absurd” and “irresponsible”. The president made a joke about how embarrassed the Chinese leader must’ve been when a US spy balloon entered their airspace. Biden also referred to President Xi as a “dictator”, further damaging the already strained relationship between the two countries.
With China’s economy on a downward spiral, President Biden’s nonchalant attitude may seem insensitive, however, it was high time someone called out the Chinese for their aggressive behavior towards the United States. “Contrary to claims the balloon blew off course, the Chinese were reportedly able to control the object, allowing it to make multiple passes, including flying in figure eight formations, over sensitive U.S. military sites to collect information.” It is concerning that the Biden administration is seemingly downplaying the threat posed by the Chinese.

While Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited China recently to help assuage tensions between the two countries, President Biden’s comment may have undone the progress made. It is not surprising that foreign policy experts are worried that this latest outburst from Biden could escalate an already-troubled relationship with China.
It is imperative that President Biden mind his words and practice diplomatic restraint. His comments have already led to additional friction and this could propel US-China relations towards dangerous ground. China has long been a hostile nation and it is crucial that we remain vigilant and watchful of their intentions. Biden’s “big mouth” could be dangerous for US interests in Asia.
