The Democrats are in a state of panic as President Joe Biden’s poll results continue to disappoint them. According to a report from USA Today’s Joey Garrison, even pollster Frank Luntz believes that the Democrats’ panic is justified. Luntz describes the situation as an “11” on a scale of 0 to 10, with the poll results being a “nuclear red light flashing” for the Democrats. This is definitely not what they were hoping for.
One poll that gave the Democrats a reason to worry was conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News in mid-September. It showed that former President Donald Trump had a 10 percentage point lead over Biden in a hypothetical 2024 general election matchup. Although subsequent polls have not shown such a wide margin, they still paint a concerning picture for the Democrats.

Some polls, like the one from Morning Consult, have Trump and Biden tied. Others, like the survey conducted by The Messenger and HarrisX, have Trump leading by three percentage points. The NPR/PBS News Hour/Marist University poll even has Biden ahead by two percentage points. However, the majority of current polls either have Trump leading or have the two candidates tied. According to Real Clear Politics, Trump is currently ahead of Biden by 1.1 percentage points on average.
What makes this situation even more troubling for the Democrats is the momentum of the polls, which has been favoring Trump recently. Trump’s ability to pull ahead of Biden, despite facing multiple indictments and legal troubles, is concerning for the Democratic party. As Luntz points out, it suggests that voters are willing to forgive Trump for everything while being less forgiving towards Biden. However, it’s important to take these poll results with a grain of salt, as they have been proven wrong in the past.
