Another day, another shocking report of our broken immigration system passively enabling criminal behavior. It seems U.S. Border Patrol agents dropped the ball again when they “vetted” and released Sakir Akkan, a 21-year-old illegal alien from Turkey. Akkan allegedly took advantage of their leniency to commit a brutal crime that’s left Americans shaking their heads in disbelief.
According to the New York Post, Akkan spotted a 15-year-old girl strolling down a street in Albany, New York on May 14. Wasting no time, Akkan allegedly jumped out of his vehicle brandishing a metal pole, and threatened her into his car. The poor girl had no choice but to comply. He then drove her to a secluded location and allegedly raped her. This teenage girl, who lived in a group home nearby, somehow managed to escape and seek help from a nearby house, ultimately ending up in the hospital.

This travesty could have been avoided if Border Patrol agents had exercised more caution when dealing with Akkan. Court records reveal that Akkan, who has an address in Troy, NY but no legal status in the U.S., was picked up by Border Patrol agents in San Diego, California last November after he crossed the border illegally. Shockingly, instead of being detained, he was released on his own recognizance supposedly due to lack of bed space. He was ordered to appear in court in Philadelphia in February 2025. One can only guess how many more victims will suffer before his scheduled court date.
Things went downhill fast after Albany cops got a hit from the FBI database while processing his fingerprints following the alleged rape. This isn’t an isolated incident, though. It’s part of a disturbing trend where weak immigration policies allow dangerous criminals to roam free.
Take the recent case of Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant from Ecuador, who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl in a New York City park in broad daylight. He had been in the country since 2021 thanks to similarly weak border enforcement. Or consider the brutal murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nunagary in Houston, Texas. Two illegal aliens, who had been allowed to stay in the country without proper oversight, lured her under a bridge and assaulted her for hours before taking her life.
These cases are not just statistics; they are vivid reminders of the real-world consequences of lenient immigration policies. How many more innocent lives need to be devastated before meaningful action is taken? The time has come to secure the borders and ensure that those who cross illegally face appropriate repercussions, for the safety of every American citizen.
