The Clinton Foundation has quietly posted new help-wanted notices — and people online did what they always do: laugh, snark, and point out the obvious. The items in question are an unpaid Fall 2026 internship for the Office of Hillary Rodham Clinton and a paid “Special Projects Associate” role supporting the Office of William Jefferson Clinton in New York City. The postings themselves are the news; the jokes are the predictable reaction.
What the listings actually say: duties, hours, and locations
The internship advertises 25–29 hours a week, duties like research, drafting memos, transcribing speeches, managing mail and archives, and helping with events. It’s listed as unpaid and requires academic credit, with hybrid work at 41 Madison Avenue in New York City. The paid position for the Office of William Jefferson Clinton lists duties such as drafting meeting agendas, editing briefs, coordinating requests between offices, and travel advance work — and shows a pay band of roughly $50,000–$55,000 a year.
“A high level of professionalism and discretion” — read the room
One phrase from the internship posting jumped out: “a high level of professionalism and discretion.” That sent social media into its usual tailspin, because context matters. When a job board asks for discretion and unpaid labor while sitting in a pricey Manhattan office, people will make the jokes they make. Some of those jokes leaned on old scandals; others simply marveled at asking young people for academic credit while demanding near-full-time hours in one of the most expensive cities in America.
Pay, labor optics, and the message to young Americans
Let’s be blunt: a $50k–$55k salary for a senior “special projects” role in New York isn’t generous, and asking for unpaid labor in 2026 looks out of step with the “living wage” talk you hear from the left. If you’re a nonprofit that raises millions and runs global programs, your staffing choices send a message. Either internships are stepping stones, or they are cheap labor. You can’t have it both ways while lecturing the rest of America about fairness and wages.
At a minimum, the Clinton Foundation should answer two simple questions: are these official Foundation listings, and why is an unpaid role being advertised for what’s effectively a near part‑time professional workload? Until we get answers, the listings stand as their own bit of theater — a reminder that optics still matter, even for people used to writing their own punchlines. If you’re young and value your time, maybe read the fine print before you hand over your hours for academic credit — especially if discretion is part of the job description.
