As the self-proclaimed gatekeeper of all things presidential debate, CNN has laid down the law for the upcoming showdown between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden on June 27. These rules were concocted after Trump brazenly declared he’d debate Biden at the drop of a hat, forcing Biden to step up to the plate.
The Biden brigade had already wrangled in May for just two debates with a laundry list of regulations. They cried foul for no audience, handpicked moderators in the form of CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, and threw in the snub that Tapper is one of Trump’s critics. That's really smooth, guys.

In its infinite wisdom, CNN tacked on some more guidelines this past weekend. There are two commercial breaks, which is clearly a Biden bonus if you ask me. They even put a leash on campaign staff, nixing any interaction with their candidate during breaks. And get this – no opening statements, just short closing ones. Bravo, CNN, keep it snappy.
Microphones will be silenced, except when it’s a candidate’s turn to speak, almost like a high-tech mute button that might come in handy to hush certain voices. Overall, it seems like CNN is paving a smooth road for Biden while giving the good ol’ Trumpster a bit of a bumpy ride. Will Biden need all this pampering to hold his own against Trump? Time will tell.

And speaking of Trump, he’s been firing shots, not with tweets this time, but with claims that Biden should take a drug test before the debates. When asked if Biden's popping pills for peak performance, the White House played the “I can neither confirm nor deny” game. Sounds like a plot straight out of a spy novel.
If that wasn’t enough drama, there are whispers in the wind about Biden’s mental sharpness, or lack thereof. Polls paint a grim picture of doubt in Biden’s cognitive fitness, with some folks convinced he’s not fit as a fiddle for round two. With all these speculations floating around, it’s no wonder the anticipation for the showdown between the two heavyweights is reaching a fever pitch.
So, grab your popcorn and settle in, folks. It’s shaping up to be quite the show. Will Biden conquer the debate stage with his pre-approved rules, or will Trump shake things up with his unpredictable flair? One thing’s for sure: this battle of wits is bound to be one for the history books.
