Democrat Convention Descends Into Chaos as Biden and Obama Struggle to Rally Support

The Democratic National Convention is once again proving that it’s the party of confusion and chaos, and Wednesday night marks the third chapter of this unfolding circus in Chicago. With Joe Biden and Barack Obama waddling on stage past 11 p.m. and no coherent message in sight, it’s clear that the Democrats are having a bad hair day—except they don’t have hair to mess up.

Over the first two nights, the Democrats have indulged in a Trump-bashing fest, flinging absurd insults and losing themselves in a sea of grievances. They seem to have forgotten that actual policy matters—opting instead for a series of speeches reminiscent of a high school drama club’s production of “Bolstered Ego: The Musical.” Desperately clinging to the hope that working-class voters haven’t fled the party like a cat from a bathtub, they insist abortion is the defining issue of our times. Spoiler alert: light show and catchy playlists aren’t winning back that demographic.

Eyes are now fixated on Kamala Harris’s chosen running mate, Tim Walz, who shares a special talent for embellishing the truth. This Minnesota governor has spun a tall tale regarding his National Guard service, claiming heroics that wouldn’t pass muster at a kindergarten show-and-tell. In an unusual twist, even some mainstream media outlets are throwing Walz under the bus—a rare feat for the Democrats. His pattern of dishonesty extends well beyond the battlefields of his imagination; from his DUI cover-up to elaborate lies about taco seasoning, there’s a question mark over whether anything he says can be trusted. Voters are left scratching their heads, wondering if electing him would entail also getting a side of deception.

As the convention unfolds, attendance seems to dwindle more than a diner breakfast after 11 a.m. Even with a candidate who can stay awake long enough to deliver a speech, there remains an air of desperation emanating from the party, as if it’s trying to convince itself that the 2024 election is nothing to fret about. Former President Obama’s speech on Tuesday did little to dispel the anxiety brewing beneath the surface, as he dropped hints about the impending doom if the Democrats assume they have this in the bag. Michelle Obama, ever the pragmatist, didn’t sugarcoat the stakes when she made it clear Harris might have a fight on her hands.

Then there’s the specter of Nancy Pelosi, who is slated to speak and presumably will say something that tastes a little like betrayal. After all, she’s the one who strategically shoved Biden aside like yesterday’s odd leftovers in favor of Harris. The audience can expect some delicate political footwork as she tries to distance Harris from the tainted legacy of the Biden administration.

If that wasn’t enough to grab attention, former President Bill Clinton—now comfortably ensconced in his post-presidency haze—will take the stage. It’s unclear if he’ll address the elephant in the room regarding his past transgressions, but the atmosphere is sure to be charged. Democrats are playing a risky game by keeping him in the spotlight, especially when they could have booted him off in favor of someone else. Perhaps next to Trump, he could even be a winning debate wildcard—after all, it worked once before for the former president.

As the spectacle rolls into its third night, one thing is certain: this train wreck is entertaining, if not outright bizarre. Those trot out their grievances and half-baked ideas, while true conservatives are lining up to tune in. The end is in sight, but not without a few more comedic twists and turns for this beleaguered party.
