Lynn Fitch: Footage Backs Officer, Activists Rushed Verdict

The Senatobia shooting that killed one‑year‑old Kohen Wiley has been a political and emotional lightning rod. New bodycam and surveillance clips have leaked and been released. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch says her office found the officer’s use of force justified and will not seek criminal charges. But the pictures and the politics don’t add up neatly, and that’s worth calling out.

What the footage actually shows — and what it does not

The newly surfaced clips move this case out of rumor and into evidence. The videos show officers around a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot, the car pulling away, shots fired, and the terrible result: a dead toddler. State investigators say the video supports their conclusion that the officer faced an imminent threat. The family’s lawyers and an independent pathologist say the footage and medical findings are consistent with a shot from the passenger side and that the killing was not justified. In short: the footage gives both sides what they want to see.

Why activists, media, and politicians jumped the gun

It is very tempting in our wired age to pick a side fast. Activists on social media and some outlets treated early versions of the story as settled fact. That political rush matters. It pressures investigators, frames public opinion, and can turn grief into grievance theatre. But don’t get me wrong — skepticism of police claims is healthy when departments have shown worrying culture problems. Senatobia had prior controversies, and people have real reasons to demand answers. The difference is this: demanding transparency is one thing; declaring a proven conspiracy is another.

What should happen next — real transparency, not theater

If anyone is serious about justice — for Kohen, for his family, and for the officers involved — there are simple, practical steps. Release the full set of body‑worn, dash, and surveillance videos unredacted. Publish the MBI packet and the AG’s decision memo explaining how the conclusion was reached. Make ballistic and autopsy reports available for independent review. If federal review is requested, let it proceed. That’s the sober, grown‑up path. Social media mobs and partisan press releases are not.

Politics will howl. Protesters will scream. Partisan pundits will crow. Still, the public deserves a full, transparent accounting — not leaks that feed a narrative and not a short press release that ties a neat bow on a messy tragedy. Demand the evidence. Demand the forensics. And demand that the next chapter be about facts, not just feelings or slogans. Kohen and his family deserve nothing less.
