Governor Ron DeSantis has taken decisive action by ordering the removal of Flock Safety license-plate reader cameras from Florida state rights-of-way, calling their use “out of control” and directing state agencies to pull them down. His move is a welcome rejection of creeping surveillance that too often gets normalized in the name of convenience.
DeSantis warned bluntly that had these systems been ubiquitous during the COVID-19 lockdowns, they would have been turned into tools to enforce public-health diktats — tracking who left their homes and who refused a vaccine. That is not theory; it is a sober reminder of how technologies can be repurposed by officials hungry for power.
Hardworking Americans who value freedom should applaud a governor willing to push back against mission creep, even when the same tools promise easier policing. Conservatism is about protecting liberty while fighting crime, not trading one for the other with new surveillance deployed without transparent rules or penalties for abuse.
That said, this is not a simple black-and-white fight: sheriffs and police chiefs rightly point out that license-plate readers have helped catch violent criminals, recover missing persons, and solve crimes more quickly. Conservatives should defend law-and-order tools that save lives, but insist those tools come with strict limits so they never become dossiers on everyday Americans.
The common-sense path is for state legislatures to write guardrails now — narrow, enforceable limits on data retention, who can query the system, and criminal penalties for misuse. Leaving the decision to private companies or bureaucratic discretion invites abuse and profiteering; if data about our movements can be monetized, liberty is for sale.
Governor DeSantis did the right thing by sounding the alarm and moving to curtail unchecked deployment; now conservatives must turn alarm into action. Demand transparency, demand criminal penalties for data abuse, and insist that safety never become an excuse for a permanent surveillance state that watches honest Americans instead of criminals.
