A reckless driver in Spanaway drove into opposing traffic and nearly struck another vehicle before leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit that ended only after officers used stop sticks and a PIT maneuver to bring his pickup to a halt. Deputies and the Washington State Patrol say the stop sticks shredded all four tires of the F-250, yet the driver kept going until police forced him off the road and arrested him.
The chase tore along Mountain Highway East at speeds reported over 100 miles per hour and lasted roughly six miles, putting everyday motorists and first responders in grave danger as the suspect swerved and nearly ran into a ditch. Officials say the man later admitted he ran because he didn’t want to go to jail — a confession that lays bare the contempt some have for laws that protect our communities.
Credit where it’s due: deputies and troopers coordinated a careful, tactical response — deploying tire deflation devices and waiting for a safe place to execute a PIT maneuver rather than risking a reckless endangering of bystanders. That measured professionalism likely prevented a fatal crash, and it’s a stark reminder of why we should back our law enforcement officers instead of undermining them.
