Gavin Newsom Backs Kamala Harris for President After Biden Exits Race

Gavin Newsom is back in the headlines, and this time it isn’t just to remind Californians of the wonders of shutting down businesses. In a predictable twist, the governor recently threw his support behind Kamala Harris for president, following Joe Biden’s dramatic exit stage left. Picture this: two Democratic power players, childhood friends from the Golden State, now ready to tussle their way to the top. Isn’t it adorable how they sidestep rivalry like it’s a game of hopscotch?

In Newsom’s view, Harris is the presidential ticket to ride, equipped to champion the Democratic cause against the supposedly existential threat posed by Donald Trump. He described her as tough, fearless, and tenacious, which raises the question: what’s she been tough and tenacious about other than her political career? Harris climbed her way up the political ladder, propelled by a once-sizzling romance with Willie Brown, who seemingly holds more influence in California than any elected official. The trajectory from his endorsement to her gubernatorial aspirations has a Shakespearean quality, if Shakespeare were solely focused on political maneuvering and had a vendetta against small business owners.

Newsom’s decision not to challenge Harris for the crown raises eyebrows—especially considering he’s had his sights set on the presidency for a while. With a restrictive rule barring two Electoral College members from the same state serving on a ticket, the governor has opted for a position not so much as a running mate but as an enthusiastic cheerleader from the sidelines. This could be interpreted as a sign of camaraderie or perhaps a sneak peek into the Democrats’ game plan for 2024. It’s like watching two players share a controller in a video game but clearly letting one person hog all the glory.

As for Kamala Harris, her lackluster record doesn’t seem to deter her supporters. Her climb to political prominence comes thanks to well-timed opportunities, a shallow resume, and a historic potential as the first black, Asian, and female president. What an incredible achievement it would be if she could turn that potential into tangible results! However, if past performance is any indicator, the American public might be left wondering just what “historic” really means when it comes to political efficacy.

The Democratic playbook seems simple: excite the base by making history, not necessarily by having a blueprint for effective governance. It’s a clever strategy, indeed, but America might be looking for more than just a symbol in the White House. With each endorsement, each political maneuver, the stakes get higher—are voters truly convinced that a pair of California Democrats can wrest control from an administration that, for all its faults, likely feels more in touch with American priorities than Harris’s past record reflects? It remains to be seen if Newsom’s endorsement truly means anything beyond an exercise in political posturing.
