Germany Blocks Uwe Boll’s Vigilante Film: Censorship or Protection?

Germany’s film ratings authority has effectively blocked the release of Uwe Boll’s new vigilante thriller Citizen Vigilante by refusing to grant it a classification, a move the director says was a 6–2 vote and amounts to political censorship. The picture, which stars Armie Hammer and was picked up for U.S. distribution by Quiver, opened in the United States this month while German audiences were told they could not see it through normal channels.

This is exactly the kind of soft authoritarianism conservatives warned would creep in when cultural gatekeepers were empowered to police ideas instead of protecting art and speech. Germany’s decision — framed as protecting youth from “incitement” — is a bureaucratic dodge that lets elites silence uncomfortable truths about crime, justice, and the failure of institutions that are supposed to keep citizens safe.

Boll’s film is blunt and unapologetic: it tells the story of a man who sees the legal system fail victims and decides to take justice into his own hands, a premise that has enraged establishment critics who instantly labeled it xenophobic. The director has pushed back hard, insisting he is not a Nazi and blasting the FSK’s refusal as censorship, which only proves his point that difficult conversations are being shut down rather than answered.

Thank God for platforms that still understand free expression — the movie was posted on Elon Musk’s X, allowing millions to judge it for themselves instead of having cultural commissars dictate what art is permitted. Patriots who believe in freedom should cheer anyone who forces these debates into the open, defend artists against bureaucratic blacklists, and demand that our institutions stop hiding behind convenience to muzzle dissenting voices.
