If we are serious about voter ID and election integrity, talk is cheap and staying in town matters. The choice is simple: do your job or explain why you won’t.
Senators refuse to go home: SAVE America Act and the August recess
Over the weekend a group of GOP senators publicly vowed to block the Senate’s planned August recess unless the chamber advances the SAVE America Act. Senators Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Ashley Moody and others made it clear they will object to unanimous consent to adjourn. That’s not theater. It’s a real, procedural way to force votes and keep the Senate working on voter ID, proof-of-citizenship rules, and other SAVE provisions instead of letting them wither while politicians head to the beach.
John Thune’s math problem and the filibuster
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has been blunt: show me how this ends. He’s right to demand a plan, but he’s also using the filibuster math as an excuse to avoid a fight. The rules are not a moral shield for inaction. If Republicans are serious about passing election integrity measures, they can either build the votes or change the rules. Saying “there’s no path” while the base is screaming for action looks like leadership surrender, not prudence.
Pressure from the top — President Donald Trump jumps in
President Donald Trump piled on, telling Leader Thune the Senate should not “leave town” until the SAVE America Act is passed and even suggesting ending the filibuster. Love him or hate him, the President is reflecting a real demand from voters. If the GOP majority won’t act, pressure from the grassroots and from across the party can — and should — force a choice: pass voter ID and election fixes or stop pretending this is a priority.
What should happen next
The right move is simple: refuse to allow a leisurely August recess until the Senate votes on the SAVE America Act or the leadership lays out a credible path to passage. If that requires roll-call fights, quorum calls, or even changing the rules, so be it. Voters didn’t send a GOP majority to Washington for vacations. They sent them to secure elections. If Republican senators truly believe in election integrity, they’ll stay, vote, and stop hiding behind procedure.
