On July 8, 2026, a family dog in Graham tumbled roughly 40 feet down a cliffside after chasing a rabbit in the 23600 block of Rim Road East, a nearby resident heard the animal in distress and called for help. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the fall in their weekend blotter and local outlets reported the dramatic scene, underscoring how quickly a joyful romp can turn dangerous. This was no minor scrape — it was a steep, hazardous rescue that tested ordinary citizens and our first responders alike.
Trained members of the PCSO Search and Rescue Ropes Team were dispatched and hoisted a deputy down to the stranded dog, who greeted help with obvious relief and affection. The deputy carried the animal to safety, pulled back to the top while the dog nestled in his arms, and the images remind us what competence and courage look like in uniform. The entire episode was handled calmly and professionally, the kind of quiet heroism our communities depend on.
At first the pup’s owner could not be located, so deputies transported the dog to the Tacoma Humane Society; deputies later learned her name was Nico and she was reunited with her family the following day. That humane, orderly approach — saving a life, securing temporary care, and making sure the animal returned home — is the proper, commonsense response citizens rightly expect from public servants. It’s reassuring to see the system work when people and animals are in trouble.
Hardworking Americans should take two lessons from this rescue: first, thank and support the men and women who train for dangerous, technical rescues so they can answer the call without hesitation; second, exercise basic responsibility as pet owners so preventable emergencies don’t waste taxpayer resources or put lives at risk. In a time when too many institutions are politicized, this is a plain reminder that local deputies and volunteers still deliver for their neighbors — and they deserve our respect, gratitude, and full support.
