In a recent operation in New Jersey, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers caught 38 illegal immigrants with criminal records or pending criminal charges. These individuals had committed serious crimes like rape, DUI, felony burglary, money laundering, and sexual conduct with a child. ICE emphasized their commitment to holding accountable those who break the law by entering the country illegally. The agency’s goal is to target illegal immigrants who have committed crimes, especially considering the large number of illegal immigrants currently in the United States.
The Homeland Security Secretary issued guidelines in 2021 that encourage discretion in enforcing immigration laws due to the limited resources available to apprehend the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. Despite these challenges, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division arrested over 73,000 noncitizens with criminal backgrounds in the fiscal year 2023. Among this group were individuals with charges or convictions for homicide, sexual assault, weapons offenses, and other serious crimes.
