The recent arrest of an illegal immigrant accused of killing a Maryland mother has underscored the challenges President Biden faces with his immigration policies. Despite efforts to tighten border security, the influx of illegal immigrants into the U.S. during his presidency has already caused significant harm.
Since January 2021, approximately 5 million more illegal immigrants have arrived in the country. The most recent case involves the arrest of Victor Martinez-Hernandez, who is believed to be a member of the gang MS-13 and fled El Salvador after being suspected in a killing there. After crossing the U.S. border in February 2023, Martinez-Hernandez allegedly attacked a mother and her 9-year-old daughter in Los Angeles before being accused of killing Rachel Morin in Maryland.

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler directly linked the killing to the border situation, stating, “Victor Hernandez did not come here to make a better life for himself or for his family. He came here to escape the crime he committed in El Salvador. He came here and murdered Rachel.” This incident is not an isolated case, as there have been similar instances across the country involving illegal immigrants who arrived during Biden’s presidency and have been charged with serious crimes.
The Biden administration recently announced a change in asylum policies, aiming to reduce the number of unfounded claims and improve border security. However, critics argue that the new measures are insufficient and have not effectively addressed the challenges posed by illegal immigration.
Despite the administration’s efforts, the arrest of Martinez-Hernandez and other similar cases continue to fuel negative perceptions of Biden’s handling of immigration. The ongoing criminal cases and public opinion data indicate that immigration remains a significant concern for many Americans, with a majority expressing disapproval of Biden’s approach to the issue.
Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the need to prioritize American safety and border security. However, Biden’s administration has been considering new policies to provide a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants married to U.S. citizens in an attempt to appeal to Hispanic voters and broaden its support base.
