A coalition of U.S. government agencies has laid bare Iran’s latest antics: attempts to meddle in the upcoming election with a hefty side of cyber shenanigans targeted at former President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, experts from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation wrapped a big red bow around this revelation. They sent it off to a world that’s already a little too used to foreign interference in American politics.
Back in August, the alarm was sounded about Iran creeping into Trump’s campaign like an unwanted houseguest who drank all the good whiskey and decided to stick around for dinner. Now, it appears that those meddling Iranians not only hacked the Trump campaign but also attempted to hand over sensitive materials straight to President Joe Biden’s camp. Apparently, the Bidens missed the memo about replying to unsolicited emails, a skill that seems to be slipping in the tech-savvy age.

The intertwined relationship between Biden’s political organization and Iranian cyber actors raises eyebrows, especially when it became clear that Biden's team hadn’t received a single perky reply to the Iranians’ digital overtures. It’s almost as if they were just too busy, possibly glued to their phones, swiping left on the whole situation. Meanwhile, Iranian hackers were busy trying to kick the proverbial legs out from under Trump, working tirelessly to distribute stolen Trump campaign information to various U.S. media outlets. One has to ask, at what point does this become an outright conspiracy?
In their joint statement, the agencies pointed out that Iran’s actions are symptomatic of a broader strategy to sow discord among Americans and chip away at the belief in the electoral process. This approach is as relentless as an infomercial that never seems to end, featuring a particularly ill-mannered trio of nefarious adversaries: Russia, Iran, and China. All these nations see the upcoming election as their golden opportunity to poke the bear of American democracy and see what chaos might ensue.
Ironically, while the FBI has claimed leadership in countering this foreign meddling, it appears that the Biden campaign’s lack of engagement raises questions about their allegiances. Are Democrats perhaps too friendly with these foreign powers, or are they just masterful at avoiding emails even when they come from potential foes? As the November election looms, it appears that this bizarre web of interference could very well be the highlight reel of what not to do in politics. As the nation braces for what could be another tumultuous election cycle, it remains to be seen how this all plays out on the grand stage of American democracy.
