In a recent appearance on mainstream talk shows like The View and 60 Minutes, Vice President Kamala Harris continued to present a master class in political ambiguity. During a segment on The View, a show known for its gentle prodding, Harris found herself momentarily stumped when asked to distinguish her policies from those of President Biden. The Vice President desperately tried to position herself as a fresh face for a new generation, but it looks like she also wants to cozy up to the status quo. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
Harris’s attempts at portraying herself as a change agent fall flat when one considers her own insistence that she has been an influential player in the Biden administration’s decision-making. It’s hard to be both the candidate for change and a loyal lieutenant in a presidency that has become synonymous with turmoil and confusion. Things became even more entertaining during the 60 Minutes interview, where a seemingly basic question on the border crisis left her speechless. One can only assume she was hopeful the segment would focus on the Vice Presidential “No Man’s Land,” where answers go to die. As the crisis at the southern border lurches into its third chaotic year, her fumbled responses might have more to do with a reality-check that the Biden-Harris administration has no clue how to handle it, rather than her usual convincing demeanor.
The true irony of Harris’s performances lies in her reluctance to engage with the media. Is it because there are no viable answers to the questions Americans are asking about a botched administration? Perhaps she’s been told that ignorance is bliss, especially when the alternative is admitting failure. The empty platitudes and jargon might work well in a bubble of left-leaning commentators, but the general populace isn’t buying it, and neither should they.
In the end, while Harris may be aiming for a future spotlight, she’ll need to start answering questions that average Americans care about if she hopes to secure any political legacy. A political career built on confusion and ambiguity might just be a flexible ladder on her way to nowhere.
