What was meant to be a solemn signing to honor the victims of September 11 turned into a disgraceful political theater when Mayor Zohran Mamdani handed the ceremonial 9/11 pen to his chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem, immediately after signing city executive orders. The optics were terrible and predictable — a mayor who owes his office to a woke political coalition made a deliberate choice that has left grieving families and patriotic New Yorkers furious.
Kassem is no anonymous staffer; he is a public figure who previously represented Ahmed al‑Darbi, a Guantánamo detainee tied to al‑Qaeda plots, and that history is not a trivial detail when you’re at a 9/11 remembrance event. The mayor’s decision to spotlight a lawyer with that client list—regardless of the constitutional duty lawyers owe clients—was at best tone‑deaf and at worst a cynical signal.
The backlash was immediate and justified: multiple 9/11 families have publicly urged Mamdani to stay away from Ground Zero this year, and prominent figures have called his presence insulting to those who lost loved ones. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and other critics say this isn’t about politics so much as common decency, and the petition from victims’ relatives makes clear that many see Mamdani’s actions as a provocation rather than a gesture of unity.
City records and reporting confirm that Kassem serves as Mamdani’s chief counsel and played a role in drafting the very executive orders being signed, which the mayor’s office used to justify his presence at the ceremony. That institutional role does not excuse the symbolic choice to hand a 9/11 pen to someone who once defended a figure linked to al‑Qaeda; symbolic acts matter, especially on anniversaries that still wound our city.
Patriots should call this what it is: a political calculation that put virtue signaling over respect for victims and first responders. New Yorkers deserve a mayor who understands the weight of history and who won’t use the memory of 2,977 Americans as backdrop for a press stunt that rallies his base while alienating the very citizens he represents.
Now is the time for accountability, not spin. Mayor Mamdani should apologize directly to the families he offended, explain why this gesture was necessary, and pledge real actions that honor the memory of 9/11 victims rather than playing to an online crowd. If he refuses, voters and elected officials must insist on answers and consequences — respect isn’t optional when it comes to that day.
We owe the victims and their families more than empty gestures and political theater. Hardworking Americans who defended this country and lost loved ones deserve leaders who will stand with them without equivocation, who will put solemn remembrance above partisan optics, and who will never let the memory of 9/11 be cheapened for the sake of a photo op.
