It seems one of the nation’s top mega-donors, Ken Griffin, has decided to play coy with his billions until Donald Trump makes the all-important VP pick. Griffin's political purse strings are tighter than ever for a man who’s shelled out $233 million in federal elections. He’s already funnelled $5 million into Nikki Haley’s super PAC this cycle and had a soft spot for Marco Rubio in 2016. Coincidentally, Rubio’s name keeps popping up in Trump’s VP shortlist, making Griffin’s wait-and-see game all the more intriguing.
Rumor has it that Trump is gearing up to unveil his vice presidential pick at the Republican National Convention on Monday. Media-chattering classes have been losing sleep over who Trump will tap to be his right-hand man (or woman). But Griffin has put his checkbook on ice, much to the glee of the liberal peanut gallery.

While Griffin’s wallet remains sealed, he’s showering Trump and the family of Corey Comperatore, the man tragically killed on Saturday, with his thoughts and prayers. It’s a touching sentiment, but one can’t help but wonder if it’s a bit of a distraction from the real story: Griffin can’t seem to make up his mind on whether to back Trump until he knows who the VP will be.
As always, Griffin waxes poetic about political violence having no place in our democracy, extolling the virtues of our sacred right to vote. It’s a nice enough sentiment, one that fits snugly in a Hallmark card, but actions speak louder than words. With the Republican National Convention around the corner, the real question is: Will Griffin’s checkbook match his rhetoric once Trump makes his VP choice?
At the end of the day, Griffin’s hesitation only adds fuel to the fire of speculation. Will he or won’t he back Trump when the VP pick is finally unveiled? All eyes will be on Monday’s announcement as Griffin’s billions hang in the balance. Conservatives everywhere hope that Griffin will come through for Trump once he knows who’s joining the ticket. Until then, the suspense continues, as does the endless cycle of millionaires meddling in American politics.
