Despite their ongoing feud, Senator Mitt Romney recently declared that he believes Donald Trump will win the Republican Party’s nomination for president in 2024. Romney, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and won it in 2012 before losing to Democratic nominee President Barack Obama, expressed his opinion in the Capitol just 24 hours after Nikki Haley announced her decision to run for president.

Romney noted that if Trump secures the nomination, he would not be endorsing him for president. He also added that he wouldn’t be supporting Biden either. Romney’s opinion is significant as he and Trump have had a complicated relationship over the years.
Romney has been a vocal critic of Trump since the 2016 election and was one of the most prominent Republicans to oppose his candidacy. He even delivered a speech in which he called Trump a “phony” and a “fraud.” After Trump won the election, the two men appeared to reconcile, and Romney even briefly considered serving in Trump’s administration.
However, their relationship soured again in 2019 when Romney became the only Republican senator to vote to convict Trump in his impeachment trial. Trump responded by attacking Romney on social media and in public statements, calling him a “failed presidential candidate” and a “total loser.”
Romney has continued to criticize Trump since then, particularly over his role in the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Despite their ongoing feud, Romney believes that Trump will once again secure the GOP nomination for president in 2024.
Romney mentioned that if there is an alternative to Trump, it would only be realistic if it narrows down to a two-person race at some point. He also noted that it is up to the donors and other influential people that know the candidate and his or her family to decide whether or not it is time to move on from Trump.
Romney’s opinion is significant as it shows that despite their tumultuous relationship, he still believes that Trump will be the most likely candidate to become the Republican nominee for president in 2024. It remains to be seen whether or not Trump will actively campaign against Romney in his next Senate race.
