The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has expressed a serious concern that the ongoing geopolitical aggressions of Russia and the possibility of China aligning itself with Russia could lead to the outbreak of World War III. In a warning issued on Monday, President Zelensky cautioned that a global conflict could arise if China were to form ties with Russia. This statement was made during President Joe Biden’s visit to Kyiv and two days after U.S. intelligence officials revealed that China may be considering providing military assistance to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s armed forces.

The Ukrainian leader expressed his concern that if China were to join forces with Russia, it would have dire consequences. He urged China to make a pragmatic assessment of the situation and consider the potential repercussions of such an alliance. “Because if China joins forces with Russia, there would be a world war, and I do think that China is aware of that,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky issued a warning at the same time as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken advised Chinese diplomat Wang Yi against the possibility of China providing weapons to Russia to be used in the Ukraine conflict. Blinken emphasized that there would be repercussions if China were to offer material assistance to Russia’s incursion into Ukraine.
In regards to Moldova, Zelenskiy informed Die Welt that Ukraine had shared intelligence with Moldovan President Maia Sandu regarding Russia’s alleged plans to stage a coup in Moldova. Although Sandu did not request assistance, Zelenskiy stated that she expressed gratitude for the information and was knowledgeable about Ukraine’s circumstances.
Tensions have been on the rise between Moldova and Russia due to the expulsion of five Russian diplomats by the Moldovan government. The expulsion was a response to Russia’s alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt. In response, the Kremlin has criticized the expulsion and stated its intention to take retaliatory measures, which may include expelling Moldovan diplomats, imposing trade restrictions, and implementing economic sanctions.
Moldova’s pursuit to join NATO has created a complex situation, especially in light of Russia’s historical apprehension towards the military alliance, considering it a threat to its national security. The continuing geopolitical tensions between Russia and its former sphere of influence emphasize the importance of cautiously managing the situation to prevent a global conflict.
