The establishment media, ever the loyal lapdog of the political elite, has managed to bury itself deeper into irrelevance. The only fans left are the very establishment figures whose interests they cater to—ironically including some senators who now have the task of voting on President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees. As if the swamp needed any more ammunition, NBC decided to lob a grenade in the form of a thinly-sourced hit piece targeting Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense.
Hegseth, a decorated veteran and former Fox News host who left the network upon receiving Trump’s nomination, suddenly found himself the target of backroom gossip turned media sensationalism. NBC claimed that a spectacularly vague group of “ten current and former Fox employees”—and yes, they insisted on anonymity, presumably because they feared the wrath of the very media they decided to leak to—had some dirt on Hegseth concerning excessive drinking. This from a network that has become synonymous with the term “fake news.” One can’t help but chuckle at how far they’ll go to smear someone who stands against the establishment.
The reaction from Hegseth’s supporters was swift and, frankly, comedic. Many of his former colleagues took to social media platform X to vehemently defend him against the faceless allegations. Those who know Hegseth personally couldn’t keep quiet, and it seems the collective response could double as a heartfelt episode of a daytime soap opera. Janice Dean, a co-host from Fox, proclaimed she never saw signs of the alleged behavior and touted Hegseth as a dedicated family man. Meanwhile, Will Cain and Rachel Campos-Duffy went full throttle, labeling the NBC report as nothing short of “horses—.” It seems the gloves are off, and the former colleagues are ready to take a stand, figuratively brawling with NBC’s anemic journalism skills.
In an inspiring twist worthy of a dramatic Hollywood climax, former Fox producer Breanna Morello put pen to paper, drafting an open letter in support of Hegseth addressed to every sitting senator. How poetic, a call to arms against cowardly journalism that hides behind anonymity. It would appear the establishment bears no shame, launching its unfounded attacks while real journalism sits on the sidelines with its feet up, sipping on lukewarm tea. Morello’s letter served as a desire for accountability, but will the swamp creatures give a hoot?

Dr. Nicole Saphier, another long-time colleague, chimed in to confirm that in all her years with Hegseth, she never suspected he had consumed anything wilder than breakfast food before airing. The litany of character witnesses continues, and the media’s attempt to smear a good man’s reputation only succeeds in backfiring. Contributors and friends rallied behind Hegseth, making the thin media narrative look even flimsier than it already is. The question arises: how many more mischaracterizations will the establishment media attempt before someone finally gets called on their clear agenda?
As Hegseth stands at a pivotal moment in his career, the landscape has been made clear. The establishment won’t stop at attacking him; if successful, it’s likely they’ll turn their sights on Trump’s other anti-establishment nominees. Each one will endure a similar BS treatment as the media attempts to paint a picture that fits their narrative of the day. For senators voting on cabinet nominees, the lesson is clear: it might be high time to develop a healthy skepticism of the establishment press.
