The brutal assassination of Charlie Kirk last year shocked the nation and exposed how frayed our public life has become, yet it also revealed the contempt some on the left hold for decency and for the rule of law. What should have been a moment of sober reflection instead became a feeding frenzy of hateful online comments from abroad — and those comments did not go unnoticed by American authorities.
Washington moved swiftly when it found foreigners publicly celebrating Kirk’s killing, revoking visas and signaling that cheering political violence won’t be tolerated on American soil. Senior officials, including members of the administration, warned that noncitizens who glorified the murder could face removal, a necessary step to protect our communities and deter malignant behavior. Critics on the left cried censorship, but defending citizens and enforcing immigration laws is not censorship — it is common sense.
A recent case that crystallizes this moment involved a Canadian woman, Kaitlyn Tracey, who was caught on camera slapping a teenager on a New Jersey boardwalk over patriotic clothing and was later ordered deported by an immigration judge. Tracey had overstayed her visa and the assault brought her to the attention of law enforcement and ICE, which moved to remove someone who had broken American law and endangered a minor. Law and order must matter, regardless of where someone came from.
The story took an even stranger turn when Tracey’s husband surfaced on social media with posts that mocked the death of Charlie Kirk, reminding conservatives that the cultural rot on the left can be personal and vindictive. Reporters have noted those posts in their coverage, and they feed a broader story of a media and activist class that too often celebrates the downfall of its opponents rather than condemning violence. Americans should be furious that such callousness is normalized.
Across the border, prominent Canadian politicians and academics made inflammatory statements in the aftermath of Kirk’s death, forcing public apologies and administrative action in some cases. That kind of rhetoric from people who teach our children or run government is unforgivable; it signals a moral collapse that spills over into real-world harm and gives cover to extremists. If you lead or educate, you bear a duty to model restraint and basic human decency.
Conservatives should welcome the enforcement we’re finally seeing: when immigration rules are upheld and when celebrating murder carries real consequences, democracy is safer and the adults are back in the room. This is not about silencing disagreement — it’s about refusing to allow cheers for violence to flourish unchecked on social media and in classrooms. Let those who mock our grief or condone violence know there are tangible costs to such depravity.
Hardworking Americans want two things: free speech and public safety. We can have both by defending the First Amendment at home while insisting that noncitizens who cross lines into criminality or who cheer on political murder do not get to live here with impunity. Hold the left to its own professed standards, demand accountability, and keep fighting to restore common sense and respect in our public square.
