Rachel Maddow looked like she was watching her favorite gluten-free toast burn on live TV. Even though she knows Biden is on a fast track to losing, the President still seems to be living in a parallel universe, blissfully unaware of the grim reality. The poll denialism burst forth like an unwanted guest during his ABC News interview with George Stephanopoulos and again during his NATO press conference. Usually, a champion for the Democrats, Maddow, this time, couldn’t perform her usual gymnastics; she seemed genuinely worried about Biden’s sheer detachment from his plummeting political fortunes.
The MSNBC host expressed concerns about whether Biden is receiving information reflecting reality. His aides appear to be playing a political version of “make believe,” sifting the details they share to keep him from being further unhinged. Maddow hinted at a troubling scenario in which Biden’s own team might be too scared to tell him the truth, fearing his mental state might tip over the edge.

After the train wreck that was the June 27 debate, Biden has hemorrhaged support from folks who once cast a reluctant vote for him. These disenchanted voters aren’t flipping to Trump; they’re choosing to sit this one out, which works out in Trump’s favor if you connect the dots. An Electoral College landslide is on the horizon for Trump, irrespective of tight national polls. For Biden, it’s unprecedented that he thinks he’s winning—he might as well be consulting a Magic 8-ball. Either he’s channelling Baghdad Bob-level denial or sharing a bit too much of Hunter’s extracurricular substances.
Even the Democratic pollsters are waving the white flag, with a leaked OpenLabs memo painting a bleak picture. Six states have swung towards Trump, with Pennsylvania looking primed to flip in 2024, which would be the political equivalent of throwing in the towel. Private polling from both Democrats and Republicans has shown Trump widening his lead over Biden, jumping from a 4-point to a 10-point advantage.
Maddow’s moment of candor speaks volumes. When even the Democratic cheerleading squad can’t sugarcoat the crisis, you know the ship is taking on water fast. Biden’s strategy at this point might as well be titled “adult daycare.” The question remains: How long until they let Grandpa Joe know that nap time is over and reality is knocking at the door?
