Representative Gill: Asking About Omar’s Immigration Isn’t Racist

The Justice Department appears to be looking into Representative Ilhan Omar’s immigration status, and Representative Brandon Gill made a simple, sensible point on Fox News: asking questions about that probe is not automatically racist. In a political climate where accusations of bias are flung like confetti, it’s worth pausing and remembering that rule of law and accountability aren’t moral crimes. They’re what keeps the system honest.

Rule of law, not identity politics

Representative Gill was right to push back. Asking whether a congresswoman came into this country properly, or whether records and procedures were followed, is a law-and-order question — not a racial smear. We don’t get to pick and choose when rules apply based on politics or party. If the DOJ is examining paperwork or past actions, that deserves a clear, factual answer. That’s how you protect both the integrity of immigration laws and the reputation of any public official under scrutiny.

The left’s default dodge: “racist”

If you want a masterclass in how to dodge accountability, watch the left’s playbook: label the question racist and act like debate is over. It’s a cheap rhetorical trick. It’s also lazy. The media’s reflex to parrot that line without demanding answers is telling. Conservatives aren’t asking these things to be cruel; we’re asking because elected officials should meet the same standards we expect of everyone else — transparency, honesty, and lawful behavior.

Demand transparency from all sides

If the DOJ is investigating, fine — let it proceed. But that process should include disclosure where possible and cooperation from Representative Omar. Congress should also insist on a clear accounting. Republicans can demand answers without shrieking for blood, and Democrats can’t be allowed to hide behind identity politics every time inconvenient questions arise. Equal enforcement of the law is a conservative principle, and it should be a bipartisan one.

At the end of the day, this is about trust. Voters are tired of double standards and political theater. If someone is under legitimate scrutiny, they should welcome transparency, not weaponize race to deflect. Representative Gill’s point was simple: question the facts, not the person’s skin color. That’s how a free republic keeps its promises — and that’s a reminder both parties desperately need.
