Schwarzenegger: California Democrats Drove Refineries Out, Gas Surged

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger landed a punch this week that California Democrats are still trying to dodge. Speaking at his climate summit in Austria, he called out state leaders for driving refineries out of the Golden State and then acting shocked when gas prices and emissions didn’t magically fall. It’s a blunt reminder that good intentions don’t equal good policy.

Schwarzenegger’s blunt message at his climate summit

At his event, Schwarzenegger said California’s push to punish fossil fuels has backfired. He warned that strict taxes, heavy regulations, and relentless hostility toward oil companies have pushed refineries and fuel workers away. The end result, he said, is dependence on oil imports and higher prices at the pump. Simple math. Not rocket science.

Democrats drove refineries away — and then complained

Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democrats like to posture about cutting emissions. But actions matter more than slogans. When businesses face ever-changing rules and steep new costs, they either shrink or move. That means fewer refineries in California, less local supply, and a bonanza for out-of-state producers. Then the same leaders blame the market instead of admitting their policies created the problem.

The perverse outcome: more emissions, less security

Here’s the kicker: importing more fuel often raises total emissions. Shipping oil across the country or the world adds carbon. Local refining, when done under strict state environmental controls, can sometimes be cleaner overall than long supply chains. So the climate crowd’s booting of industry can actually worsen the thing they claim to fight. Meanwhile, Californians pay more at the pump — and the state wonders why voters are mad.

If California wants cheaper gas, stronger energy security, and real emissions reductions, it needs hard choices, not virtue-signaling theater. Schwarzenegger was right to call it out. Lawmakers can keep lecturing and losing businesses, or they can craft policies that balance environmental goals with reliable supply and jobs. Pick one — you can’t have both the moral high ground and empty gas tanks.
