Secretary of State Marco Rubio pulled a thread this week that exposes a dark web of digital infrastructure used to enable political violence, and Americans should be furious that it took this long for our government to act. The administration has designated the Italy‑based Autistici/Inventati network as a global terrorist entity, saying the group provided gated encrypted mailboxes, hosting, and other tools to violent far‑left actors here at home and to transnational terror networks abroad. This is not a debate about free speech — this is about infrastructure that operationalizes attacks, doxxing and coordination with hostile actors.
What the designation reveals about Autistici/Inventati and Antifa
The State Department and Treasury say Autistici/Inventati ran a custom platform hosting tens of thousands of mailboxes and blogs, and that access was gatekept by ideological vetting — not a neutral public service but a vetted operational ecosystem for extremists. Officials have tied users on that network to Rose City Antifa and other violent cells that have doxxed federal officers, advocated attacks on institutions, and circulated operational playbooks. The Treasury moved quickly to add the group to its SDN list and issued a limited wind‑down license, signaling this is a counterterrorism priority, not a policy debate.
Domestic violence with transnational implications
The most chilling claim in the memo is that the same plumbing used by American anarchists was allegedly pushing information to Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran’s IRGC, a connection that should remove any doubt about the national security stakes. This is proof that what some have insisted was “just an idea” can and does become material support for terror and real‑world violence, including arson and targeted campaigns that put civilians and law‑enforcement families at risk. The Justice Department under Attorney General Merrick Garland and other prosecutors who treated these networks as harmless activism owe the country answers for missed opportunities.
Now is the time for subpoenas, asset tracing and prosecutions
Designation is only the first step — Republicans in Congress, federal prosecutors and state attorneys general must use every legal tool to follow the money, subpoena records, name U.S. funders and hold facilitators accountable. If NGOs, foundations or dark‑money pass‑throughs financed or concealed infrastructure for violent actors, those entities should be exposed and prosecuted where the evidence supports it. Financial institutions must freeze assets and cut off access to payment rails; enforcement teeth are required if this measure is to do more than create headlines.
Reject the civil‑liberties pretext and defend our communities
Predictably, digital‑rights groups will howl that this is an attack on privacy and activism, but the administration’s memo is about material support and targeted operational infrastructure — not legitimate dissent. National security and public safety come first when servers are used to plan attacks, circulate target lists and coordinate with foreign terrorist organizations. Americans who value law and order should stand behind Secretary of State Rubio’s move and demand that the full chain of sponsors, enablers and operatives be exposed and brought to justice.
