In a surprising turn of events, former President Donald Trump is being considered as a potential replacement for Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House, following McCarthy’s ouster filed by Republican Matt Gaetz. McCarthy was voted out by his GOP colleagues and House Democrats by a narrow margin of 216-210, making him the first House speaker in American history to be ousted by a motion to vacate. McCarthy’s decision to strike a deal with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown ruffled many feathers within the Republican party.

While McCarthy’s position is now being temporarily filled by Representative Patrick McHenry, a growing number of Republicans are advocating for Trump to take on the role. Although there is no requirement for the Speaker to be a House member, this move would be historic and unprecedented. Conservative figures like Sean Hannity, Steve Bannon, Alex Jones, and Rudy Giuliani have all voiced their support for Trump as Speaker. Hannity even claimed that some House Republicans have been in contact with Trump and have started an effort to draft him for the position.
It’s no secret that the Republican party is deeply divided, but these calls for Trump as Speaker are seen by many as a way to unite the party. Supporters argue that Trump’s leadership and accomplishments during his presidency make him a compelling candidate for the role. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Troy Nehls, and Jim Jordan, Republican Representatives, have also expressed their support for Trump as Speaker. Greene, in particular, outlined her reasons for backing Trump, citing his commitment to ending the war in Ukraine, securing the border, supporting the military and police, and much more.
While Trump’s potential candidacy for Speaker may be intriguing to some, there are still those who believe his true place is in the White House as the next president. Jim Jordan, for example, stated that he wants Trump to be the next president of the United States, but that if he wants to be Speaker, that would be fine too. As the speculation surrounding McCarthy’s replacement continues to grow, it’s clear that Trump’s name is circulating as a serious contender. Only time will tell if this unconventional idea becomes a reality.
