The U.S. Supreme Court has decided to take up a case involving the availability of the abortion-inducing drug known as mifepristone, and as a conservative Republican news writer, I couldn’t be happier. This is a step in the right direction towards protecting the sanctity of life and ensuring that women have access to safe and responsible medical care.
The case stems from a ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who found that the FDA’s approval of mifepristone was done improperly and needed to be suspended. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals later ruled that the drug could remain on the market but with certain restrictions. Thankfully, the Supreme Court has now decided to fully consider the matter and consolidate the cases brought by the Department of Justice and Danco Laboratories.

A study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute revealed that emergency room visits increased by a staggering 507 percent between 2002 and 2015 following the use of this drug. Furthermore, 60 percent of these visits were incorrectly attributed to miscarriages. These statistics reveal the dangers of chemical abortion and emphasize the need for stricter regulations.
In addition to the risks associated with mifepristone, the method itself has become increasingly popular. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 53 percent of all abortions in 2021 were chemical abortions. This rise in popularity has prompted the need for greater scrutiny and regulation to ensure the safety and well-being of women.
Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative legal organization, has rightly argued that the FDA’s removal of safeguards surrounding mifepristone was politically driven and not based on scientific judgment. The FDA’s decisions should be rational and grounded in sound medical evidence. By curbing the availability of mifepristone, we can safeguard women’s health and protect the culture of life that the Supreme Court upheld when it overturned Roe v. Wade.
It’s disheartening to see the Biden administration and its allies in the pro-abortion movement dismissing the concerns of those who want to maintain reasonable safeguards and restrictions on abortion. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s claims that mifepristone is safe and effective are simply not supported by the data. It’s clear that there is a concerted effort to undermine the FDA’s scientific judgment and push for unrestricted access to abortion.
