The surf at Seabright State Beach turned savage on Saturday, July 25, 2026, when a sudden set of 8-to-10-foot waves pulled a 10-year-old boy out into pounding water and left the whole beach holding its breath. Video captured the heart-stopping moment a teenage lifeguard plunged into those monstrous swells to reach the child, a scene Americans everywhere should see and remember.
What follows in the footage is the kind of calm courage our country needs more of: 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams raced in, made contact with the limp boy after he’d been swept about 15 yards offshore, and battled wave after wave until colleagues and cleared bystanders could help pull the child to safety. Witnesses and local reporters say the young rescuer dove beneath incoming breakers and refused to let the boy go, radioing for backup while keeping control in conditions that would scare many adults away.
Thanks to that grit and quick action the child, identified by his father as Nathaniel, was evaluated by paramedics, released to his family, and is expected to recover physically though shaken by the trauma of the experience. This was not an isolated incident but part of a weekend when Santa Cruz lifeguards answered dozens of calls, and it should remind every level of government to back public-safety programs that protect families rather than politicize them. President Donald Trump even said he wants to honor the young hero and bring him to the White House for recognition, a proper salute to bravery that sends the right message to kids and to the nation.
Let this rescue be a call to support our lifeguards, invest in youth programs like junior lifeguards, and teach basic water safety to every child who plays on our shores. We owe Ryder Williams and his fellow rescuers more than applause; we owe them funding, training, and the gratitude of a grateful nation that still values courage, competence, and community.
