The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump this past Saturday was surely a nightmare for nearly everyone involved. Witnesses in Butler, Pennsylvania, were undoubtedly horrified as the events unfolded. But for Trump and his close-knit circle, the experience was truly life-altering.
Trump’s close friends also felt the seismic impact of the attack. Notably, golf legend Tiger Woods, who was en route from Florida to Scotland for a tournament, revealed to BBC Sport that he was deeply shaken by the incident. Woods confessed that he could not sleep during his flight because of the stress and worry for his friend.
Woods admitted that his lack of rest and anxiety carried over into his Sunday practice round before the 152nd British Open. He described how he spent the entire flight glued to the news of the attempted assassination, unable to focus on anything else. This clearly affected his performance on the golf course, as he openly discussed how disturbing the news was to him.

It’s not surprising that Woods was so deeply affected. He and Trump have enjoyed a long-standing friendship, sharing many rounds of golf over the years. Their relationship extends beyond the game, with Trump even awarding Woods the Medal of Freedom back in May 2019. CNN, not usually known for its Trump-friendly coverage, even acknowledged their enduring bond.
The shock resonated deeply within the golfing community too. Trump’s popularity among golfers isn’t a fluke; he’s admired by many in the sport. Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus gave Trump a strong endorsement back in 2020, and Jim Herman, another Trump ally on the green, credited the former President for his success in the sport after winning the Wyndham Championship.
The attempted attack on Trump is yet another example of the sheer hostility he faces from certain quarters. Thankfully, the admiration from friends like Woods and many in the golfing world shows that Trump’s support remains formidable and unwavering in some corners of American life.
