Now, to some, this might sound like something out of an action movie, but for Marines trained for such direct actions, it’s just another day at the office. This kinetic move, as the military types like to phrase it, sends a clear message: the U.S. means business.
On the flip side of this military machination, there appears to be a swirling cloud of confusion and drama as Senator JD Vance seems to be caught in a spin cycle of will-he or won’t-he regarding talks with Pakistan. It seems nearly impossible to keep track of these dizzying diplomatic dance moves, but one thing is certain: behind the curtain, the gears of the Trump administration turn with a definitive policy of strength. For Trump, it seems the art of the deal may involve more than a little gunboat diplomacy.
In true Trump fashion, the administration isn’t just relying on muscle and might. There’s a certain theatrical flair reminiscent of posturing animals in the wild, like a cobra flaring its hood. Recently, federal authorities in Los Angeles nabbed an Iranian woman, suspected of arms trafficking, just as she was about to take off to Turkey. Shamim Mafi, living the high life in Southern California, allegedly brokered a weapons deal that would make James Bond jealous, all while reportedly being in cahoots with Iran’s not-so-secretive intelligence apparatus.
The case of Mafi is a potent reminder of the importance of domestic vigilance. Cozy in a suburb of Los Angeles, those suspected of unsavory activities could be potentially endangering national security right under our noses. It begs the serious question of whether such individuals, blessed with the privilege of living in the U.S., deserve to keep their legal statuses if they betray this country’s generosity by meddling in terrorist activities. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider how handily we dole out residency when the stakes could potentially involve national security risks. After all, the phrase “lifetime moratorium on terrorism” shouldn’t seem like a suggestion, but rather a common-sense mandate.
