President Donald Trump announced Friday that he was banning CNN, MS NOW (formerly MSNBC) and Politico from White House access, posting the directive on Truth Social and calling their coverage “constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS” that will no longer be tolerated in the people’s house.
The president made clear this is not a one-off tantrum but an intentional campaign to hold media organizations accountable, warning that “other Fake News Media Outlets” could be next as he framed the move as protecting the American public from dishonest narratives.
At an Oval Office event Mr. Trump doubled down, saying he was tired of “negative” coverage and even acknowledged where he finds fair treatment — “I get it from Breitbart, I get it a little bit from Fox,” he told reporters — a simple recognition that some outlets actually do report the victories of this administration instead of ginning up controversies.
Unsurprisingly the targeted outlets and press advocates reacted with predictable outrage, with CNN and Politico warning the step would threaten First Amendment principles and the White House Correspondents’ Association questioning the precedent for access and transparency.
Conservative Americans should welcome a president willing to stop playing defense while the mainstream media wages a relentless campaign of character assassination; for years outlets have acted as partisan factories while conservative voices like Breitbart have earned consistent, fair access under this administration.
If the mainstream press refuses to reform, then elected leaders must push back — not to silence dissent but to demand honest reporting that treats facts, not narratives, as the currency of public debate. The hardworking men and women who built this country deserve media that tells the whole truth, celebrates real successes, and holds power to account without partisan blind spots.
