The Trump administration’s CMS is finally doing what Americans have been demanding for years: following the money and stopping the rip-off. On May 13, officials announced they would defer roughly $1.3 billion in Medicaid reimbursements to California after audits flagged massive outlier billing and questionable expenditures tied to home health and other programs.
This crackdown is not a partisan stunt — it’s the consequence of real, documented irregularities that have been piling up. CMS and the White House task force said they identified large sums that appear to have been funneled improperly, and agency officials noted multi-state findings that together top into the billions, sparking freezes and moratoriums on new hospice enrollments pending investigations.
Administrator Mehmet Oz has been blunt: the agency’s work has uncovered at least a billion dollars in questionable benefits tied to noncitizen coverage and other abuses, and those totals have only climbed as investigators dig deeper. That kind of money belongs to American taxpayers and to our seniors and veterans, not to bureaucratic schemes or state programs that stretch the law to the breaking point.
Predictably, blue-state officials are whining and threatening lawsuits instead of answering simple questions and fixing their systems. Minnesota, California and others are pushing back, appealing federal actions and claiming cooperation even as federal auditors say state plans to rein in fraud were inadequate — the American people deserve better than soft excuses when their health care dollars are at stake.
This moment should be a rallying cry for common-sense enforcement: tighten eligibility verification, prosecute fraudsters, and stop the political theater that protects bad actors. Conservatives should applaud decisive action to protect Medicare and Medicaid solvency and demand Congress give CMS the tools and authority to finish the job — taxpayers and patients are owed nothing less.
