In other words, it’s time for Mexico to step up and do their part in keeping their people on their side of the fence.
But let’s not forget the elephant in the room: President Biden’s administration has been feeling the heat from both sides of the aisle. Republicans and even some members of Biden’s own party are raking him over the coals for fumbling the border crisis. And to top it off, the White House crashed and burned in its attempt to secure billions in aid for Ukraine and Israel, thanks to the deadlock over border policy changes. Talk about dropping the ball.
Amid this political maelstrom, Blinken’s grand entrance into Mexico coincides with the ominous approach of a mammoth migrant caravan – the largest one in over a year. We’re talking about a staggering 8,000 asylum seekers from Cuba, Haiti, and Honduras, marching towards America like they own the place. And brace yourselves, because that number could swell to a whopping 15,000 people. It’s a border security nightmare unfolding right before our eyes.
The situation is spiraling out of control. Over 730,000 migrant encounters have occurred at the southern border since October, and that’s not even the worst of it. In some harrowing days of December, Border Patrol has crossed paths with over 10,000 individuals at the border. The chaos is reaching a fever pitch, and America’s patience is wearing thin.
In a desperate attempt to rein in this tidal wave of illegal immigration, President Biden recently reached out to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. They both agreed that beefing up enforcement is the need of the hour. It’s do or die time, and the United States is watching Mexico like a hawk, expecting tangible measures to clamp down on the border mayhem.
Former US ambassador to Mexico, Earl Anthony Wayne, minced no words when he highlighted Mexico’s shortcomings in tackling the immigration quagmire. It’s time for Mexico to stop dawdling and confront the smugglers and lawbreakers who are exploiting their porous borders.
